Keller & The Keels – Thief

Thief is Keller’s 15th release and the 2nd collaboration with the “out-of-sight” husband and wife duo of Larry and Jenny Keel. Keller and the Keels went into the studio for a few days in December 2009 and crafted a masterful follow-up to their popular 2006 album Grass.
Comprised entirely of unique bluegrass renditions of songs originally written and recorded by a diverse group of musicians such as Kris Kristofferson, The Butthole Surfers, Ryan Adams, Amy Winehouse, The Raconteurs, Marcy Playground and many others, Thief is sure to surprise you in the most foot-stomping and knee-slapping way.

Get yourself a copy of Thief and rediscover how, regardless of whether a song is penned by Keller or The Presidents of the United States of America, it somehow becomes his own.

Keel Brothers

This studio recording captures a major aspect of Larry Keel’s formation as a master flatpicking guitarist and a preserver of Appalachian and classic American Country music. It was Larry’s older brother Gary (older by 12 years) who taught him to play the guitar at age 7, and bought him his first instrument. The “Keel Brothers” Duet Guitar project is the long overdue recording that finally grants the listener a glimpse into the fantastic family energy that launched young Larry into virtuoso playing by the age of 17. The Keel Brothers consider that their music is deeply rooted in their father Jim Keel’s generation and his musical tastes, drawing on selections from the earliest Stanley Brothers (whose hometown is near Clintwood, Virginia- the hometown of the Keels), Hank Williams, Doc and Merle Watson, Classic Country Gentlemen, fiddle tunes and flatpicking guitar tunes and old ballads that were always a part of the weekly “jam sessions” of the Keels’ large circle of Bluegrass picker-friends. Perhaps the most enjoyable aspect of The Keel Brothers project is the happiness that pervades this recording. It is obvious that the Brothers are having a great time putting down into a permanent “record” these tunes that were absorbed during a youth spent in seizing every waking moment to play music: on the porch, in the kitchen while Mom’s cooking, at family and community picnics, cake walks, VFW benefits. And at night, while the rest of the family and the world’s asleep, Larry and Gary would be closed up in one of their bedrooms picking and recording long into the night.

Larry Keel, Curtis Burch, and The Experience

LARRY KEEL & CURTIS BURCH AND THE EXPERIENCE represents the monumental collaboration between legends from 2 generations of Bluegrass music. This recording is a sonic adventure suffused with the rare combination of joyous, wild energy and subtle, sophisticated expression that has become the signature style of a Larry Keel production.

Keel and Burch are supported by a super acoustic ensemble, including Billy Constable (Doug Dillard Band, Hypnotic Clambake), Woody Wood (Blue Rags), Jason Krekel (Snake Oil Medicine Show), Mark Schimick and Jenny Keel.

Recorded with superior engineering skill by Mike Brantley (former bass player for The Del McCoury Band), this project features 4 original compositions from Keel himself, a ?New Grass? original penned cooperatively by Curtis Burch, Sam Bush and Mark Olson, and an exhilarating array of pieces that come from composers close to the talented artists who appear on this project: arrangements of tunes by John Hartford, Tut Taylor, A.L. Wood, the Country Gentlemen, the Dillards, the Everly Brothers and Django Reinhardt. This project is heavily inspired by the timeless music and essence of John Hartford and dedicated to his memory.

Larry Keel: Beautiful Thing DVD

Larry Keel is recognized by many as one of the most progressive bluegrass musicians of our time, yet he remains largely unknown outside the bluegrass community.

Beautiful Thing is a year in the life of Larry Keel. The film follows Larry and The Larry Keel Experience as they canvas from coast to coast, playing night after night in search of bigger and better crowds during 2002.

Audiences range from a handful of disengaged people to standing ovations at world-renowned bluegrass festivals. Larry Keel remains somewhat obscure to audiences because his style, his interpretation of bluegrass and roots music is so personal that it is almost impossible to define, and subsequently, it is almost impossible to market.

So Larry battles on, night after night, city after city, slowly generating a following of true believers, fans who sit and stare and smile in awe of this beautiful thing.

Beautiful Thing is a glimpse into the life and spirit of a true artist, during his many tours and performances of 2002.
